No, you can't. That's why you have to use pavucontrol.
In audacity, you should pick "ALSA" and "default" for the recording
options. Then beside the microphone icon, there's a meter with "Click
to Start Monitoring" written on it. Click that. Then go to
pavucontrol's recording tab. There should be an entry for audacity with
a dropdown to the right. In that dropdown, pick the USB device. Now
audacity will be recording from that.
