Sorry, you said that before. I suspect that the connector of the cable to the tablet is bad. Yes, I understand that it powers, as it does for me, but does not connect for purposes of transfer of data.
What brand/model is it?

Thanks, Ranjan. I do not suspect the cable is the culprit -- I have
used it to charge the device. I have also used the USB port to connect
other devices with no problem.
I am trying to do a
adb reboot
of the tablet.
