Your phone has to be set for MTP mode (possibly called file transfer mode) and unlocked. Then you should see an option to select it in the file manager.

That's not the device. That's your USB host controller. "lsusb" should show it. If not, then you either have the wrong type of cable or USB isn't enabled on the phone.
