I just want to read the time back from the system.

Then you want time(2). From "man 2 time":

NAME
    time - get time in seconds

SYNOPSIS
    #include <time.h>

    time_t time(time_t *tloc);

DESCRIPTION
    time() returns the time as the number of seconds since the Epoch,
    1970-01-01 00:00:00 +0000 (UTC).

    If tloc is non-NULL, the return value is also stored in the
    memory pointed to by tloc.

Hi Cameron,

This is my fault for not being clear enough.
I can't use a "C" (time.h) library for what
I am doing.

What I need is a call to something inside
    /usr/lib64/libxxxx.so.x

And I do not know which one will give me the
time.

Thank you you anyway! Much appreciated.
