I have had reasonable luck with "pulseaudio -k" restarting/resetting pulseaudio and clearing up issues with audio. That is if it works at least sometimes. I used to have hdmi audio flip out each time the TV/monitor was turned off but that has not been a problem for me for a while (but I am on f31 right now).
