Anyone know how to see who is using parport_pc?
What does "lsmod | grep parport" show?
# lsmod | grep parport
parport_serial 24576 0
parport_pc 40960 2 parport_serial
parport 69632 3 parport_pc,lp,ppdev
Ok, try dismantling the stack, starting with "parport_serial".
If you "modprobe -r parport_serial", it might remove "parport_pc" as
well if that's all that's holding it. There are a lot of modules
involved, but I assume the _pc one is the actual hardware interface.
Tried that already. When I got to "parport_serial" my
machine crashed. I could move windows by their decoration,
but nothing else, including <ctrl><alt><f2>
That's a very strange crash. But if you can't remove that module, then
you have a serious problem. See what happens with the new card.
The new card is a Lava card made to industrial standards:

I should see it in a few days.
And it IS NOT cheap. You do pay for what you get.
:-)
Thank you for all the help with this!
I will get back with results!
