What happened to xxdiff?
At least two strikes against: python2 and lack of unicode support. Maybe lack of
Wayland support is a 3rd strike. One of the other tools mentioned at https://www.tecmint.com/best-linux-file-diff-tools-comparison/ might meet your use case.
