Bob,

Your message hints that you don't specifically want the external drive
to be mounted all the time and be accessible to all users at all times,
only that it may be needed for occasional use. I have a drive attached
to my router that I mount manually for occasional backups or file
access. I have not manually created a samba server.

I am not using the same equipment as you. My router is a Netgear with a
2TB Seagate disk attached to its USB port. I can connect to it with my
F32 computer using Mate desktop and from a laptop (wifi) running Linux
Mint, also Mate desktop. The Seagate drive has the factory format -
NTFS. Samba has not been manually installed on any computer. Just to
verify, I have a recently installed F32/Gnome desktop in QEMU/KVM that
has no software additions from the live iso. This is the mount
location:
/run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share:server=r6900p.local,share=usb_storage/...
r6900p is my Netgear's name.

Using the Mate or the Gnome file manager, I was able to select the
address of my router and connect. A window opens offering to connect
anomalously or enter name & password. I did not enter name/pwd, just
clicked connect. Once connected, I added the address to my file browser
bookmarks so connecting is easier. The exact steps vary with file
manager.

When I first got the 2TB Seagate drive several years ago, I had to
modify its name to make it more linux friendly.
