I can stop md using 'echo inactive > /sys/block/md127/md/array_state' and restart it the same way (which also automounts it for some reason even though I have noauto in the /etc/fstab line). What I'm not sure about is the 'echo ... > scan' you mention. There is no such file under /sys/block/<device>.
