grep -i dirty /proc/meminfo If that number gets high enough the machine will freeze all write io (dirty_ratio/bytes) until it gets down to the dirty_background_bytes/ratio. If you hit this, how long that is is how long it takes to write out (background_ratio - ratio) * ram I have had good luck setting background_bytes to say 3000000 (3 MB) and setting ditry_ratio to say (5MB). With it being 2MB or a lower number than default (usually a % of ram) the pause is so small you won't notice it, and it some cases the pause is fast enough that other processes don't stall.
