I've always managed to get scanning working. I had an old USB scanner, well still do somewhere, that worked quite well (it's mechanical stuffed, the toothed drive belt has gone stiff). I have a pixma printer scanner combo that I can get to scan, albeit only in a *very* basic manner. Xsane can't find it, but their ScanGear MP tool can. Oddly, on the Mac, the printer can be used by USB or network, but their drivers only support using the scanner over USB. I can do it either way on Linux. The basic modes are an annoying shortcoming, fortunately I haven't needed to do anything more than it offers, so far. You have a document or photo mode (document is fax-style black & white lithographic), a colour or grayscale, and preset paper sizes. There's no preview, there's no customisable scan size/position options, no image levels control (brightness, contrast, tint, etc) and there's only a scan JPEG or scan PDF button.
