So many errors.  I wonder how?  Perhaps 2 rsyncs running at the same time?

It is almost certainly a hardware problem: hard disk, cables, power supply,
etc.   The S.M.A.R.T diagnostics and self-tests  don't always catch failing
disks, but if they tell you there is a problem then you can reasonably 
certain the other suspects are innocent.
