Try booting a live image and see if that has the same problem.
Someone suggested to me else where that I should do a reformat and only use the xfce spin version to where my install is pure XFCE and not XFCE and Gnome.
That is irrelevant. You can only run one desktop environment at a time. They aren't going to conflict. But have you tried using the Gnome desktop to see if it works?
