If you hit a key, it does get you out of the lock screen, but that
key also winds up being passed to the password entry field as the
first character of your password, so then you type your actual
password and get a login error :-).

Stick to clicking.

I guess the message is a new thing, but it's worked like that for a long time. You can either press the ESC key to scroll it up or just start typing your password. I've only had to drag it up a couple of times when something wasn't working.
