of life, and I know I need to port sbackup to python 3 going forward,

With python 3 there isn't a special package for python. It uses the
typelib bindings, so that any language can access the libraries. I
don't know what happened with gnome.ui, but as an example gtk went from:

to:
from gi.repository import Gtk
