Phoronix has a pre-review of one of the rc isos of
Fedora 32.
In the comment section, was a critic who was not impressed with Fedora 32.
I have seen this argument or opinion on YouTube Linux reviews and various
forums.
But all those reviewers do a simple install in VirtualBox, and look at
what theme-ing options are available by default and what backgrounds are
preinstalled, and what software is pre-installed, and then compare that to
something else like Linux Mint or Elementary OS or Zorin, and after an hour
or even less they draw the conclusion that nothing is new, nothing has changed,
and that Fedora is still the same old ideology of Linux nerds wanting to keep
Linux as nerdy as possible.
The critics often use terms like "less polished," etc.
The defenders often say, that all the codecs and such must use 3rd party repos
due to laws in various countries, that for whatever reason may not apply to the
critic's favorite distro.
I see the benefit to Fedora, as the huge fan-base, the forums, the web-pages, the
dedicated members who want the latest packages, even if the argument for having
them is "whooped-de-doo."
It is really hard to please all the gnome3-haters. They use terms like, "gnome3 upsets
my workflow." And although Fedora offers numerous DE's, it does appear that gnome3
is the priority. I feel distros should prioritize a DE. OpenSUSE has a great plasma version,
so why re-invent the wheel ? Elementary allegedly has a great pantheon version, ( I have not
yet tried that ), but still, the point is why should Fedora 32 try to be like them ?
Fortunately, I am content living in Rawhide with gnome3 on hardware, and can get my task done.
In a week or so, I will not be surprised to be using kernel 5.7.0.rc3-git*something. And I won't have
to make any noticeable effort to install it. Try that in Linux Mint, or Ubuntu or Debian, or Elementary
or Zorin, etc. And in less than a month, systemd will likely update from 245.5-2 to 245.5-3, and again,
it will be a routine simple thing, and will likely not break my install.
