Re: rescue mode needs rescuing!

I realize that this is generally frowned on, but I believe this is one of those situations where it's best to reply to a multiple posts at once.

I did not see Samuel's response to Ed's suggestion regarding /usr/sbin/memtest-setup until after I tried it.  It worked.  Perfect score.  I agree with Samuel: it's the same as the memory test on the Fedora Live USB flash drive.

I was interested in knowing if the on-line free memtest that Ed pointed to was better than what I already did.  I got it onto a USB stick as per instructions.  But when I try to boot with the stick in the port, the boot process jumps directly into the normal grub menu.  It does not give me a chance to go into the bios screen and ask to boot off that stick.  I lost a lot of time on this today, and trying to boot from the Fedora Live USB stick yesterday.  Why do I often not get the opportunity to go into the bios screen when I want to?  (I am not blaming anyone on this list for that; Ed's suggestion is good.)

The two very old /boot/*rescue* files that Samuel suggested I delete are gone.  Next patching (dnf --refresh upgrade) is planned for Thursday.

Connectors, boards, and wires are fine.  The smaller fan on the motherboard was replaced quite recently.  Things were cleaned then; it's all still clean.  (By the way, I'm in a very low-humidity climate, indoor relative humidity often below 10%, so the presence of mold, mildew, or "green" (copper compound?) would surprise me.)  The fans all look and sound like they're working as they should.

I'd like to address key questions before going on with alt.fedoraproject.org.  I'll put those in a separate post shortly.
