This looks like it was reported and fixed upstream: https://github.com/tpope/vim-markdown/issues/151 You might try grabbing the updated markdown.vim from there or the vim repo to test. The changes were merged into the vim repo here: https://github.com/vim/vim/blob/master/runtime/syntax/markdown.vim -- Todd
