My personal preference is to just reinstall and then copy my home directory over.  However, if you really want to duplicate it, then check the recent archives, there were a couple of long discussions about this topic.

+1  Reinstall and copy is what I do too.  Basically I make up to date backup copies of anything I use that might not be in my home directory (websites from var/www/html and databases) and save those to my home directory.  Then I can reinstall them easily after I've reinstalled the operating system and my home directory.
