I heard from someone that all new Canon laser printers should support
driverless operation, and I then asked on Amazon:

and got a response back from Canon officially plus two other semi-helpful
people saying it works for them (plus, it being the Internet, two people who
for some reason went out of their way to write that they have no idea).

That was enough for me to take the chance!
