My apologies.  Now I see what you were saying.
I worked for 17 years on the "AWIPS"(*) project, in which logging was split into different files based on date and application.  It was an excellent, easy to use (both in programming and in debugging applications) thing.  That experience influenced how I evaluated what you said.  The log files were text files, but as you say,

* AWIPS: huge application system for viewing many kinds of weather products and producing forecasts, advisories, watches, and warnings; used in all US National Weather Service Weather Forecast Offices (and several other places).  It runs on Redhat Enterprise systems.
