Understood.  That's how I did it.  More below (in my response to sixpack13)

(responding to sixpack13)
> And what does this mean ?
1. I exited Thunderbird.
2. I renamed ".thunderbird" (mv .thunderbird thunderbird_new)
3. I copied the entire .thunderbird directory tree from my back-up to my home directory. 4. I launched thunderbird from the Gnome Activities.  This resulted in a message box saying:

-----
You have launched an older version of Thunderbird

A newer version of Thunderbird may have made changes to your profile which are no longer compatible with this older version. Use this profile only with that newer version, or create a new profile for this installation of Thunderbird.  Creating a new profile requires setting up your accounts, calendars and add-ons again.

-----
At this point, I know what I did (steps 1 through 4) failed.
5. I removed the restored .thunderbird (rm -rf .thunderbird).
6. I restored the new .thunderbird (mv thunderbird_new .thunderbird)
I've since again restored the back-up .thunderbird to my home directory as "thunderbird_old".
Currently, in thunderbird_old, I have this:
-----
bash.7[thunderbird_old]: ls
 1tfov4t1.default  'Crash Reports'   installs.ini   profiles.ini
bash.8[thunderbird_old]: cat profiles.ini
[Profile0]
Name=default

I'm not clear what you're suggesting I do next, before dealing with ownership and permissions.

thanks,
Bill.
