You really need to be sure that Thunderbird has fully quit running
before backing up its database.  Likewise, that it's not running, at
all, before plonking your previous config into place of new install.

Though there should be an import function, where you can run
Thunderbird and have it drag in what it wants from your backup.  But it
mightn't drag in all aspects of a prior config.
