So do what a lot of people do.  Put in a SSD *and* a HDD.  Install the
OS to the SDD, get the speed where it makes booting (and other things)
fast, and its contents are less precious than your data.  But store
your data on the HDD that you have more faith with (which can be /home
*and* various other parts of the directory tree).

A two drive system also gives you the benefit of safer system updates.,
as your data isn't on the drive being installed to.
