This is just a guess, but it sounds like an issue with the shell command rather than the terminal. Are you using the default shell, bash? If so, do you have a custom PS1 or PROMPT_COMMAND? Having non-printing characters in the prompt string which are not properly escaped can cause this sort of problem.
