You are also going to have to be prepared when a kernel change happens and causes it to no longer compile to download an updated version that has the correct code for the new kernel. I have a RTL8814au and it also is not in the kernel and every so often you will need to go back to the last kernel that worked with it and search for an updated code to support the new kernel. It is kind of a pain, but my usb add-on wifi card works a lot better than the built-in one one my laptop.
