Hi All,

Figured it out.

AHHHHHH [expletive deleted] !!!!

It turns out that I have an "INTERMITTENT" parallel port add
on card (Star Tech PEX1P). I would poop out when booted
normally, but work when booted from a live USB, UNTIL
IT DIDN'T.  Took me FOREVER to figure out what was
going on.

I have a new card on the way.

Much appreciation for all the help and tips.
