That did the trick. Thank you!
I also have Thunar crash the first time I open my camera.
The second time is does not crash, but it does not see
anything inside my camera.
I opened bug on it. You may wish to follow it:

I will take a look at the bug. On my Galaxy S4, it takes time before
the contents of a directory show up.
I can click on 'phone' folder on the left and all the folders show up
immediately. I can then easily drag things like movies into the movies
folder (actually mp4 lectures). But if I click on the sounds directory
to get to audios I recorded, I wait. And wait, and finally they show up
and I can drag them to my computer.
I have learned patience. It has been like this for all of F28. It did
not do this back in F24.
But the crashing is recent, like about a month ago. I remember a Thunar
update and then the problem. Then at least one more Thunar update but
still the problem. Perhaps people just do not use mtp much.
