Yes, that works. The equipment is not so old but the Samba/cifs is from
the router program TomatoUSB in an Asus RT-N66U router. That combination
works so well I hesitate to update it. Perhaps I could try it in another
router, but that's another project ...
I've gained some useful experience and information for my notes from
this thread. And it looks like I have the control via Linux of the NAS
data that I was looking for, I can mount the NAS and deal with the data
in a terminal. Thunar is good for viewing contents but has it's limitations.
