Hey Ted,

Are you able to run:

sudo evemu-record

Which should look like this:
sudo evemu-record

Then select the appropriate device. In my case, it is the Elan TrackPoint, device 16. So I type 16 and press enter

Then when I click with the right and left buttons, I get the following output:
