Interesting, I don't have any of those files. Check if you do. ($root) is /boot.
Does this give us the information we need, or should I proceed with the "forbidden" edit and the re-boot?
The "edit" message is a warning that changes could get undone. Check for those files first, that might be why you're getting the messages.
