You can make one for free with a chromium os iso and a usb drive.

Looks like it is just a USB stick with bootable linux on it. You can make one for lots less than $35 with a linux live image file copied to USB.
And the reason old laptops are dying is usually because the screen and/or keyboard are flaking out, which booting linux wouldn't help at all.
