And, for that matter, each distro attracts a different type of user because of that different character. Fedora attracts users who like being on the bleeding edge, others pick Ubuntu because It Just Works and so on. And, that's the same reason people use different DEs: each one does things different, and appeals to a different type of user. That's one of the great beauties of Linux: there's no One True Way.
