You say you got the kernel and initrd.img from the server DVD? Do you mean the full one? I would suggest using the the files from the images/pxeboot directory on the server netinst iso. I haven't downloaded the big server iso to see if that directory exists there. I use the ones from the Everything netinst iso. Can you provide the kernel command line you are using?
