It's unlikely to be software, because the USB driver should at least get a
notification that something was plugged in and that is working for other
devices. My guess is that it's something with the docking stations, but it's
really strange that it happened to both at the same time.
Are the docks USB 2 or 3? And same question for the memory stick you tried.
You could try booting an older kernel version and see if that changes anything.
Are there any other computers around that you could try?
Well, I did a cold restart of all machines and cleaned all the contacts in the
dock, and now everything works again, I have no idea what the problem was but
it's fixed now....
