Have you verified that the disk is seen at all after hot plugging? You could run "fdisk -l" as root or look at the output of dmesg. If it shows up in the fdisk or dmesg output, then the kernel knows about it. I don't think eSATA stuff automounts by default (eSATA is handled differently than USB as they show up on different buses). If the kernel does see it during hotplug, you could create a udev rule to automount it. You can get the relevant info needed for the rule by running "udevadm monitor -k" (to see raw kernel events) or "udevadm monitor -u" (to see existing udev processing) prior to plugging the drive in. Watch the output when you plug in the drive. I manually mount my eSATA, as root, to a specific mountpoint since I only use it for backups.
