"sudo su -" is equivalent to "sudo su -l".

You could just run "sudo meld ..." as well.  But running
graphical apps as root is discouraged for many reasons.

It would be better to use sudo to copy the files you want to
work with and then run meld as a regular user.

For a non-graphical app, vimdiff is an alternative (though
it comes with the cost of learning another tool).
