There was a conversation here about 6 months ago about the introduction of a different level of font hinting and a different font optimizer that many people found problematic. That is probably where your problem, and your solution, lies. The details have faded for me, but I think there is a setting that can be increased to use more hinting, and it is still possible to use the old font optimizer by specifying a setting different than the default.
