Some time in recent weeks vlc stopped working for me, i.e. it will no longer play .avi, .mp4 or .mkv files but just lists a continuous stream of errors to the console (see below). Essentially the same thing happens with every video file I try, even though the same files *do* play correctly with the default KDE and Gnome video tools. It's possible that some codec is missing, but the errors don't seem to point to that.
