I'll add a few things to the answers in a bit.  But if by "proven sufficiently enough
that the normal method is not working in this case" you mean for your system in
particular, sure.  I've not even found a way to break any of my VM's.

Well right, exactly.. sorry if I didn't put it that way just to be clear. But yeah normal, seemingly everyday methods for some dumb reason don;t work for me. Nodify teh state.conf file to point at SDDM. Install SDDM. Enable SDDM in systemctl... surely I'm not missing a step.
