I don't know exactly what you mean by "neither of which would boot correctly". Are you getting a login display? From looking at the sddm log it would seem you are getting a login display and are trying to login. This line suggests this.... Jan 25 19:50:19 Vostok sddm-helper[1937]: Starting: "/etc/X11/xinit/Xsession \"env GNOME_SHELL_SESSION_MODE=classic gnome-session --session gnome-classic\"" But, if you have removed all the GNOME bits it won't be able to start a GNOME session and would explain your getting a blank screen at that point.
