Log out of X: here at the gnome login screen at least I have a few options to login, available via some gearwheel near where I type in my credentials. The wheel lets me choose between a Wayland session, Gnome on xorg etc.. I'd select all of them back to back and see whether one of them works for sleep ... On KDE (you have that?) there's hopefully some similar login option. Good luck!
