This should be automatic on start, as the system reads the EDID of the
monitor to set the resolution properly.  I've read that KVM switches
can interfere with this.  You can manually override this for X11 by
putting a file specifying the resolution in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.  You
should be able to find a template for how to do that on the web.

I'm not familiar enough with wayland to tell you how to fix this
kind of problem there.
