This should be automatic on start, as the system reads the EDID of the monitor to set the resolution properly. I've read that KVM switches can interfere with this. You can manually override this for X11 by putting a file specifying the resolution in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. You should be able to find a template for how to do that on the web.
