Wouldn't it be better to simply download the file as-is? Then, when
you play it, later on, let your player do its magic.
That way, there's less transcoding of files, and whatever your current
player is can do what it does best, as opposed to whatever abilities
your downloader had some time ago.
This is my opinion as well.
Having said that, it's only really worth considering if you're keeping
the downloaded files for posterity.
Well, I generally can't stream anyway, so youtube-dl is a great tool for me. I
think of downloading as effectively being "bookmark this for later", done
properly. Much as I view Pocket and its ilk the same way for articles.
