The drive being unable to focus on a disc is a common indicator of bad discs (which can be down to a bad random disc, or lousy products). The other thing that springs to mind is the status of the drive. Whether it's laser is dirty (smoke, dirt, fluff, etc.), laser wearing out (everything ages), or the mechanics being gunked up so it can't move properly into position. By the way, don't top post on this list. Quote what's need to make sense of a reply, and reply below what you quote, so it reads like a coherent conversation.
