I freely admit I know very little about codecs and video playback. In the past everything has just worked for me. As I said, all of my DVD drives have died.... But since I've been doing upgrades since they were working I should have what I need for things to work. With that in mind, it may be a good idea to see what gstreamer plugins you've installed? Here is what is on my system.
