If there is lots of data waiting to be flushed to the disk it will
have to finish writing all of it before it can umount. Did you just
copy loads of stuff to it?

Also if the disk has been sitting around long enough to spin down
(which lots of usb disks do), it will have to spin up again before
it can unmount.

If it is something to do with the file manager, you could
try running an umount command as root in a terminal and
see if it is faster.
