Don't put an unprotected system with open ports on the
internet:

https://dzone.com/articles/what-i-learned-after-using-an-ssh-honeypot-for-7-d

My only open port is sshd and the firewall is setup
to only accept connections from my IP address at work,
so to break into my system, they'd first have to
control my work network.

I also have only public key logins configured
for connections from outside my local network,
and have a really long public key as the only
legit external login.
