Is the hardware capable of writing at 2x?  I think newer hardware can
read at multiple speeds, but can't write at low speeds.  I vaguely
recall having the same problem the last time I burned a disk, except I
think it was 4x it wouldn't go below.

But maybe it's a bug in wodim.  You could get growisofs in dvd+rw-tools
package, and try it instead.
