I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. I only scan 
perhaps once a year, but my trusty old Canoscan N650U is 
always up to the job and scanning has been painless i Fedora 
for me.

Well, recently, no matter what I did, reboot, reload the 
module, etc, nothing worked, not even importing into Gimp, 
running xsane, nothing.

Then, I tried skanlite and it worked like a charm! I think you 
also need kf5-libksane and sane-backends-drivers-scanners, 
but, if so, they should be pulled in as dependencies.
